Even then it didn't seem as bad as in older versions. I don't know if I just got better because I played more tactically or because I knew what to expect. And even if I died it was far less frustrating as I could adapt my strategy and would succeed pretty quickly. In my current playthrough I didn't die once at many of the arenas where I used to die a lot before, even last year. It still was challenging (I'm not a super pro shooter gamer), but I died far less than before. But to my surprise it was not the case anymore. At this point Black Mesa to me had a reputation of being a brutally hard game even on normal difficulty. Last year when the Xen levels were finally released I gave the game a new try and was honestly kind of anxious. I don't know how many times I died at these places. As an example: When you come to the dam, the marines would ambush me and just rip me apart. Especially in 'Surface Tension' and 'Forget about Freeman'. There were a couple of arena fights where I died over and over again because the game was so goddamn hard. The alien grunts were bullet sponges that would shred you into pieces in seconds. The marines had godlike aim and would shred you into pieces in seconds. Only the final part before you would teleport to Xen was too tricky for me (also because back then I had a potato pc and would get incredibly low fps), so I ran around like a beheaded chicken to avoid enemy projectiles until I got the okay to jump into the portal lol.ДЄnother playthrough was 2016-17ish which was so much harder! It was terrible. Not too hard or tricky, you wouldn't die (too much) if you kept your head together. Back then it was my impression that the difficulty was comparable with HL2.

The first time I played Black Mesa around 2013-2014 when it was still a mod before it was greenlit on Steam. Just now I'm replaying Black Mesa for the xth time and I noticed something interesting: The change in difficulty between different versions over the years.
